This can be answered crudely but I will try not.

A suitor can be thought of as a Man seeking a Woman's hand in marriage. In today's society we would think of a Suitor as a person whom a Woman has dated but has no formal connection to.

A lover would be a person who has a formal relation ship of some sort, a regular social life, a fiancee or just a "Friend with Benefit's"

Well, a suitor MOST LIKELY just wanted to attract the woman to show that he is the best, unlike a lover who tries attract the woman because of love, not just want to show off.
