I've always used the term 'face shovel' where the 'bucket' breaks-out

the ground and loads itself while moving in a direction away from the operator.

A back-hoe

works back toward the operator.

Back-hoes

are good for digging holes whereas face shovels generally work ground above their 'feet'.
