The .270 is a necked down 30-06. .270 WSM is a necked down .300 WSM. The 270 WSM is faster than the .270, and has a shorter case.

.300 WM is larger in calibre, it has a longer case, and it generates more energy.
They are two different (but related) calibers of cartridges. The .270 is basically the 30-06 cartridge that has been necked down from .30 to .27 caliber. The "rate of twist" for the rifling will also be different, since you are shooting a skinnier, less heavy bullet.
The best that I can do for you,is say that that the winchester model 270 was made by winchester between the years 1963-1974.Winchester did not keep yearly production figures on the model 270.It was grouped together as the model 200 series of rifles.
.270 is the larger calibre of the two.

270 are better
In my opinion theyre fairly close to each other. Theyre both based on the 30-06 cartridge case. The 270 shoots lighter bullets at higher velocities but the 308 can shoot heavier bullets. I would base a choice depending on the application.
Main one is bore diameter. Another answer: 270=.277 diameter 30-06=.308 diameter
