The AK-47 automatic rifle fires a 7.62 mm diameter bullet. The case that holds the bullet and the gunpowder is 39mm long. So the ammunition is called 7.62 x 39. In English units, we call this a .30 caliber bore cartridge. The actual bore might be a little more like .310" or something close to that.

A "222" bore automatic rifle sounds like the AK-74, which uses different caliber ammunition from the AK-47. The 1974 model is chambered for 5.45 x 39mm ammo. So the bullet is much smaller and lighter, but the length of the case and the overall length of the complete cartridge is similar. Because the bullet is lighter, it is faster in velocity. And the recoil for the shooter is less.
