check that the firearm is unloaded. Then check it again. Close the action. Take a wooden dowel slightly smaller than the inside of the barrel, and slide it into the barrel until it rests on the face of the bolt. Mark the dowel at the muzzle. Withdraw the dowel, and measure from the end to the mark.
the open circular discharging end of a gun
look on the barrel of the rifle, It should be clearly stamped near the breach(the end you load from). Serial numbers are not placed on the barrel, since the barrel is removable and is not considered the 'firearm.' The true serial number of the firearm is going to be located on the receiver. You do not indicate which model Winchester, though. You should also understand that .22 rifles and shotguns made prior to 1968 were not required to be serialized, and some Winchesters therefore did not have serial numbers.
Need more information to answer, especially pertaining to the type of firearm it is. It could be an arsenal stamp and date of manufacture, or something else entirely.
VERY CAREFULLY! Open the action of the firearm. If possible, remove the barrel of a handgun , or remove the receiver of a rifle. Using a wooden dowel that is smaller than the bore, insert the dowel in through the muzzle of the barrel, and TAP the dowel to push the bullet back to the receiver end of the barrel. Avoid using a metal rod; you don't want to damage the lands and grooves of the barrel's rifling.
A barrel no shorter than 18 inches in length. The overal total length of the firearm cannnot be less than 26 inches from the tip of the muzzle to the end of the buttstock.
Most hold ammo in tube under the barrel. Make sure firearm is empty then unscrew the end cap on tube/magazine. Plug should be there.
