Taking most BCP late will not have a serious effect on their ability to prevent pregnancy, the exception to this is the progesterone only "mini pills" - being as little as 3 hours late leaves you susceptible to ovulation and pregnancy and must have a reliable form of back up until you have been back on them for 7 days with no mistakes.

If you are on a progesterone only pill and having trouble taking it at the same time daily you should discuss a more reliable form of BC with your health care provider.

Will taking birth control and different times of the day make a period late?

Yes. As directed by all doctors and on the instruction labels of all birth control pills, you are supposed to take your birth control everyday and at the same time. If you take your birth control at different times everyday, it is not allowing the birth control to adapt in your body the way it is supposed to and it decreases the effectiveness of the birth control as well. Some side effects of taking your pill at different times of each day may include: pregnancy, late/irregular periods, and spotting or breakthrough bleeding.

Does it matter if you are off by ten minutes on your birth control?

I am on the desogen birth control pill, and the instructions say to take it "around the same time" every day. That means you can be 10-15 minutes late taking the pill with no side effects. After taking it more than 45 minutes late though, you start to run into dangerous territory. I don't reccomend ever being more than 15 to 20 minutes late taking it, EVER. I have been on the pill for one year now.
