Hugo Schmeisser
Colt introduced their Frontier Six shooter in this caliber in 1878. Remington may have been earlier with the Model 1875, or Merwin & Hulbert with their "Pocket Army" revolver. M&H used the designation 44-73 (44 caliber, Winchester Model 73)
The AK-47 is typically chambered in 7.62x39mm caliber.

There ARE rifles and revolvers chambered for the 44 magnum cartridge. If the weapon is marked ".44 Magnum" then it can be used in that weapon. You should know that there are other .44 caliber catridges, and THOSE weapons (44 Special, 44-40, etc) cannot use 44 magnum loads.
