Condition codes may be a number or a letter.
A number indicates the readiness of the weapon to fire. 1 means a round is chambered, magazine in place, safety on, ejection port cover closed. There is no condition 2 for the M-16 series. 3 means chamber empty, bolt forward, magazine in weapon, safety on, cover closed. 4 means no round chambered, no magazine, bolt forward, safety on.

A letter code indicates the wear and maintenance states of the rifle.

A - serviceable (without qualifications)
B - serviceable (with qualifications)
F - unserviceable (repairable)
G - unserviceable (incomplete)
H - unserviceable (condemned)
