Well, you could talk about anything with him ie. how his day went how was classes/ work went about his childhood toys/tv. shows/friends/ memories what he as like as a baby like what was his first word was what is his family like his friends or you could ask the about their name or origin or you could ask some would you rather questions people love to talk about themselves or just talk about YOU or bring up something random to break the silence I love making my boyfriend laugh over the phone and he does the same for me we talk on the phone for hours and if you ever run out of stuff to say on the phone you could ask to hang up for awhile to think of stuff to say works for me :) Hope this helps!
