The body begins to convert all of its stored resources into energy, meaning that fatty tissues are broken down and used for fuel. If a body isn't receiving the nutrients it needs it can develop vitamin and nutrient deficiencies which may lead to diseases such as anemia. Once there is no longer any fatty tissues to break down and use for energy the body will begin to start breaking down other tissues such as muscle, which can lead to permanent damage and eventually death. If food intake is resumed again the body will still remain in "starvation mode" for quite some time in an attempt to restore all of the resources lost during that period, meaning a larger percentage of food digested will be converted into fatty tissues.
