You cannot. An ATM card number and the corresponding bank account number are seldom the same. The only way to find it is to use the correct PIN number for that ATM card and then try to get a mini statement advice from the ATM machine. The bank statement will contain the account number linked to this ATM card.
Is my bank account number the same number on the front of my direct express card
Probably by the card number. Card numbers are often allocated in 'blocks' - starting with the same digits - for example - all AMEX card numbers might start 4757. Additionally - there might be small print embedded in the card telling any vendor it's not a bank debit card.
An ATM or Automatic Teller Machine, card is a plastic card, issued be bank, that looks like a credit card. It allows you to do the same things as you would at a bank. You can withdraw cash, deposit money, check account balances, and receive a copy of your statement using your ATM card and the password to your account, which is called a Personal Identification Number, or PIN
To activate your debit card you most likely will need the PIN. (personal identification number) If it is a new card, you would have either created the PIN with your bank prior to receiving the card or the PIN will be provided for the card, but it will come in a separate mailing about 2-3 business days after receiving the card. You should also be provided a new PIN when receiving a replacement card for a lost/stolen debit card. Not always, some banks do allow you to keep using the same PIN. For replacement cards, that have the same card number as your previous card, you will want to use the PIN for that previous card. There are a few ways you can activate your card. Usually a sticker on the front of the card should provide a phone number to call to activate or the number may be provided in the literature sent with the card. You can also take the card to an ATM machine and activate it by either viewing you balance or making a withdraw. Some banks may require you use their ATM machine to do this. You can also take the card to your local branch to activate it. In some cases a PIN is not required to activate the card. Usually because the phone number provided to activate the card will have you select your PIN during the activation process. In which you will need to verify your personal information, i.e. social security number, birth date etc.
go to your bank and they will isssue a new card with the exact number as your expired one.

No. They are not the same. The ATM card number is usually different than the bank account number. These days banks offer debit cards which contain 16 digit numbers whereas bank account numbers are much smaller than that.
Always only call the number on your statements or card or from the trusted website of the bank --- if it's real, they will make the link.
My experience is No. A large portion of the number is the same, but the last 3 or 4 digits differ, just as when the card is cancelled and resissued if lost or stolen.

the same way you use any bank card

Your debit card should have a MC or VISA number on it, since the money comes from the same place and is faster than an e-check, use it instead-most people do it that way that use a debit card. If you are using a debit card I am surprised they ask for a routing number that makes no sense

It's the same number. Generally 16 digits, it's the number that is embossed into the card.
No, The credit card number is the long string of numbers embossed on the card. The account number is not shown on the credit card - it will be on your statements.
