Yes! Or at least to some degree. That's why I always think twice nowadays while text messaging or chatting on the internet. It's ok to use smileys in some instances, while in others it's not. Let me give you two examples:

(In reply to someone) - Thank you [Note how the happy smiley gives the respone a quasi-gay feeling]
OK:
What's up? :PpPpPpPpPpP [Note how the extra added "tongues" give this commonplace inquiry an extra humorous twist to it. Hilarity is sure to ensue.]

When texting a chick, then I don't think it's gay, cuz they're used to it. But if you're texting another dude, then yea, it's totally gay haha
