Most patients will experience some form of blistering with any properly executed laser tattoo removal treatment. It is your body responding to the injury by the laser. One of the good things about blistering with tattoo removal is that is not very deep in the skin and should not cause scarring. However, these blisters can get fairly large including covering the entire area treated by the laser. Don't worry, these blisters heal up beautifully and it will seem like you never had them. Most blistering is gone in one week although occasionally it can last up to two weeks. Most patients will keep them covered if they are in area that may be uncomfortable when wearing clothes (for example, on the waist where your pants button or on your foot where you wear shoes and socks). The blisters will heal up well on their own so just sit back and let your body do the work for you.

Here are a few things that may increase your risk for blistering: 1. Lighter skin

2. Bright, colorful tattoos- tattoos with lighter colors require the use of a 532nm wavelength laser which tends to blister more.

3. First treatment- During your first laser tattoo removal treatment, you have more ink than you will during your second, third, etc. Since you have more ink, there is slightly more side effects to the tattoo removal treatment. Again, don't worry too much about blistering, just expect that it will happen and know that it will heal up nicely. Sometimes you even see your tattoo color come out with the blistering which is a very good thing.

Is a rash normal after laser tattoo removal?

While it is normal for many people to have a reaction after tattoo removal (I assume you're referring to laser tattoo removal and not some other process), any skin issue appearing after either a tattoo, body piercing, or tattoo removal, warrants a trip to the doctor to rule out more serious issues like infection. Remember that laser tattoo removal works on the ink, not the skin. However, higher heat lasers can cause rashes and blistering on the upper layer of skin from prolonged exposure.

Recently got a tattoo on forearm and there are blisters appearing on certain parts of it could anyone tell me why this is happening is it infected or is this normal?

First of all are the blisters on just the tattoo or are they on the surrounding area? If the blisters are found to be in the tattoo and the surrounding there is not much to worry about. I have seen this many times and it usually comes from shaving too close (it's like a razor burn). Now, if it just on the tattoo you may be having a reaction to the soap that was used during the tattoo process, or, you may be having a reaction to the aftercare you are using. YOU ARE USING A TATTOO AFTERCARE, YES! If your tattoo is older that 10 days and you still have these small blisters, try using straight alcohol to help dry up the blisters. I would not advise using it before the tat is at least 10 days old. If the blisters start to exude puss you should see a doctor immediately and get some antibiotics. Your fist 10 days is critical to your tattoo, do what your artist told you and you should have little to no trouble. If you tattoo was performed at a professional shop, you can always ask to see the autoclave, spore test results, and board of health license.
