1. Your fertile period can start several days before ovulation. Peak fertility occurs 24 to 36 hours before ovulation, and is detected by clear (egg-white) cervical fluid that is stretchy. The cervix will be open and soft, and the position of the cervix is high.
2. You can detect ovulation by an increase in your basal body temperature. In many women, ovulation occurs 11 - 16 days before the next period.
3. The sperm need to already be in your body before ovulation. After ovulation is too late because the egg only survives about 24 - 48 hours, and the sperm will not have enough time to reach the egg if they are not present prior to ovulation.
4. It takes several days for a fertilized egg to travel to the uterus.
5. Once in the uterus, it takes several days for the egg to attach. The total time is usually 7 - 10 days after ovulation.
6. Once attached, the fertilized egg releases hormones that let the body know a pregnancy exists. It is these hormones that the pregnancy test is looking for. These hormones also tell the body to not shed the uterine lining.
7. If your period occurs less than 10 days after ovulation, the fertilized egg may not have had enough time to attach and signal a pregnancy to the body. This is known as luteal phase defect. You may have conceived, but the fertilized egg will be flushed out of the body with the uterine lining.

For some females, they may have all the signs of pregnancy, and know they are, but may not receive a positive on a HPT until they are well into their 9 or 11 week.
