Alcohol not only affects the individual drinker but people around them and society as a whole. It has a big impact in workplace with absences, work accidents and lower performance which can lead to unemployment. This costs the employee, employer and social security system.

Heavy drinkers take more absences than most people that is shown by alcohol dependence and drinking problems. Of course those who are heavy drinkers and do go to work are at greater risk of having work accidents.

The problem also affects productivity. Those who drink regularly have a lower productivity rate than those of unaffected workers. Co-workers usually notice a lack of self-direction which is not good when working. Alcohol problems could even lead to the individual losing his job and thus unemployment. This could have a cascade effect because if they have nothing to do, it may lead to increased drinking.

Heavy drinking has been linked to violence between marital partners and to a lesser extent towards others, because it increases the proximate opportunities for violence.
