Winchester serial numbers are consecutive, the first gun made was #1. the 100th had a serial number of 100, the 1000th was 1000 and so on. It's not like an automotive VIN.On some models, like the 1897, there may be a letter stamped as well, this indicates a revision, some change made to the original design. but that's it, no mystery or secret codes to crack.
