Generally, alcohol isn't good for your health because it is the most common drying agent in food. It tends to "dry out" hard to reach areas in your cavity. Even alcohol in some kinds of mouthwash have the same effect! My best advice to you is to try to avoid alcohol if the freshness of your breath is really important at that time.
If you really can't avoid drinking alcohol, try this oral care line that I've been using for awhile now. It really has killed my bad breath. It's called Therabreath, an oral care product line that relies on OXYD-8 which oxidizes your mouth and keeps you away from dry mouth, which is the beginning of bad breath. Try their gum and breath strips for on the go freshness. Bring them with you when you go out to drink. Tons more info can be found at therabreath.com.

Brushing your teeth is best, rinsing also helps. Mints, chocolates, fruits all help. You should also be worried about your fingertips. Smell them sometime after smoking.
Wash your hands, brush your teeth or pop some mints.
