ICT (Information communication technology) has advanced enormously in retail. Some 30 years ago a till was just a stand alone calculator that produced a list of prices that a till operator took from labels on stock. Now with the use of internet, large back-end databases and bar coding. Retail tills are more of a computer terminal than till. Many systems are used to calculate sales in volumes of stock, reorders the stock via a back-end database, can order stock from suppliers and warehouses, arrange cash, credit and debit sales, organise direct to home services and sell insurances, and a range of financial packages. Added to this is the increase in home shopping especially with food stores. Staff emploed to "pick" a customers order use a system called PDC - Portable data Capture, which is connected via wifi to the stores stock and order system -
