I didn't do anything special. I had a lot of stress in my life (my husband) I was 198, in a size 18 and I'm 5'1. I went to the doctor because I was dieting and gaining weight, I was developing an ulcer, breathing problems, really bad heartburn and blatter problems. My doctor gave me something for my problems and told me to either eliminate the stress or find a better way to deal with it. I chose to get rid of the stress. So I left my husband less then 30 days after see my doctor. I took my kids moved out and stayed with family.
I started eating a little less and walking a little more in a week I had dropped 8 or 9 pounds. I moved into my house and continued on that path, I was already in the habit of not frying my foods which helped too. And every couple of weeks I would check my weight. 30 days after I left my husband I was down 15lbs, 60 days I was down 25lbs, 90 days I was down 32lbs, and now just past 120 days I'm down 42lbs, weighing in at 156 and wearing a size 12 . I'll still losing weight, but I am now starting to focus on target areas like my mid-section and toning. I still walk everyday and I still continue to eat the smaller portions of food. I don't walk far, but it's always intensive and I don't eat special food, just smaller servings. I also have a great support system which includes my children. That's what's working for me, hope it can help someone else; but you know the saying different people different things.
Yes.

According to APEXFitness.com a female age 32 who is 5'6" and weighs 310 lbs burns 3099 calories a day without exercising. Supposedly, to lose one pound of fat, you need to burn 3500 calories more than you eat. So 40 lbs would be 3500x40=140,000 calories. 4 months is about 120 days. So you would need to eat 1166 calories less than you burn every day. Which means that at 310 lbs, you should eat 1932 calories a day. But that will change as you lose weight. At 290 lbs, you can only eat 1784 calories. And your intake gets lower as your weight drops.
Eat healthy and exercise.
if you lost 4 pounds each week and you wanted to lose 40 than you would have to do that for 10 weeks.
There's 4 weeks/month so 10 months.
