A balanced diet means that you're eating food that contains the right amounts of the different nutrients that you need, carbohydrates, proteins etc etc.

Weighing what you put on your plate can certainly help you achieving this, but unless you know what numbers to shoot for merely weighing your food won't do much good. The "plate model", where you'd typically have 1/4 protein(often meat), 1/4 carbohydrates(pasta, potatoes, rice...) and 1/2 of salads, vegetables is another way towards a balanced diet, although not as accurate.
