As implied by the old adage "It takes 42 muscles to frown and only 4 to smile but it doesn't take any to just sit there with a dumb look on your face", smiling does require that you tense certain muscles, which would use a tiny amount of energy. Perhaps enough to allow you to eat a sesame seed without gaining weight.
