Yes. This is not a "gay thing". It's just to compare - is this guy taller than me, is he stronger, do I look more athletic... If you go to a men's bathroom in many countries outside of the US, you may notice men being much more "open" about checking each other out.

Straight men are fascinated with the homoerotic, they'll make gay sex jokes to each other, cross lines that wouldn't normally be crossed because it's funny to them.
