Everyone needs calories. The amount of calories needed is dependant upon your weight/height and activity level. For example, a person weighing 350 pounds needs more calories per day than a person who weighs only 150 pounds. Although the 350lb per person needs more calories, they can burn more calories with less exercise and it easier for them to lose weight initially. Children do need calories, as well as adults but it is more important for children to get quality calories than it is an adult. For example, a kid eating macaroni and cheese for dinner every night is not providing adquate nutrition because the child is not gaining any vitamins, or minerals or protein, etc. It is vital for children to receive vitamins/minerals and protein for children from their foods than it is for adults.
Adults should get 2,000. Children should get 2,500.
Young children need the nutrition from food to aide their development (both physical and mental). This is particularly evident in teenagers who are going through puberty, and whos diet 'intake' may increase correspondingly because of a need for nutrition (often taken from food)

Yes, children do need more energy than adults because they are in a phase of rapid growth and development. Their energy requirements are higher to support the growth of tissues, bones, and organs. Additionally, children tend to be more physically active, which also increases their energy needs.
