Yeah, that's what I done. I stretched up to 4mm in half an hour. It was kind of sore but well worth the pain! :)

The other point to remember is that if down the road you want to go back down to normal ear lobes you can with the properly stretched lobes, you can't with a straight up 4 mm piercing.
