Both terms are used in the service industry, and have similar but subtly different meanings.

.

Turn-around time is the time it takes from the moment a request arrives to the moment that request is completely fulfilled.

.

For example, if you take your car to the mechanic, the turn-around time is the time that elapses from the moment you drop off your car at the mechanic's shop to the time it is ready for pick-up.

.

Lead-time is the amount of time you have to wait before you can start to work on a task due to the delayed availability parts, personnel, or other resources.

.

For example, if your mechanic does not have a part in stock, and cannot fix the car until that part arrives, then the lead time is the time from the moment the part is ordered to the time it arrives in the shop.

.

Turn-around time may or may not include lead time, depending upon the circumstances. Auto body shops, for example, often examine damage to a car, then order the parts (lead time), and only after all the parts arrive, bring the car into the shop, and then repair it (turn around time). But if, during repair, they discover a broken part they did not identify during the initial damage examination, the turn-around time must now also include the lead time of this part, since the car is waiting for the part to arrive.
