It is a fake Jacobite song written by James Hogg (The Ettrick Shepherd) and published in a book of fake Jacobite songs (Jacobite Relics) in about 1819. It was published to cash in on the wave of sentimentalism started by Sir Walter Scott's poems and novels. Read "The King's Jaunt" by John Prebble to get a good background to the period. It describes the visit by George IVth to Edinburgh, stage managed by Scott and the hysteria which resulted in a frenzy for all things Highland. The truth is both Scott and Hogg, who were well acquainted with each other, would have had no truck with Jacobitism if they had lived in that era. Both were Lowland Scots of a Presbyterian background. Many Lowlanders considered Highlanders as little more than quarrelsome cattle thieves and certainly did not rise up to follow Prince Charlie.
