l964 it was filmed, it may have been released as late as l965. I can recall seeing it at the State Theater (In Jersey City) in that year. somewhat oddly programs which were essentially edited-down playbooks were sold in the theatre lobby, this is rare with movies but then that was a Disney production. I didn"t like it. I didn"t like the stage version- wouldn"t waste time ont he film of (The Sound of Music) either. One too sweet-talked and the other too phoney. on the second film, nobody in their right mind is bouncy-wouncy or Happy-Go-Luciky about a dog bite! It hurts!=and if from a pet involves a major breach of trust, this is heavy stuff not laugh it off type of mishap like maybe falling in soft snow- quite timely!
According to the Disney film, one of the songs clearly states it takes place in the year 1910. However, the first book was published originally in 1934 and referring to the illustrations indicates that these stories were 'modern' at that time. The children's clothing is not consistent with 1910, nor is the language. Disney also added the word Supercalifragilisticexpialidoucious, which is not in the book, although Mary does say spit spot and straviage.
London, England. 1930's.
Mary Poppins was created in 1934.
She doesn't have a phone. You have to write a note, tear it up, throw it in the fireplace, and let the wind take it up the chimney, remember? Seriously, Mary Poppins is not a real person. P. L. Travers invented the character to use in a series of books. Julie Andrerws later played Mary in the movie.
In the novel, or the film, this is not directly stated. there are two child actors in the movie Version- Jane and Michael Banks, and one of the songs is tailored for them. It is definitely a musical comedy. The ages are not directly stated. it seems to take place in the Summer so school and ages-grades, etc do not come up in the plot, My guess they are school age, but not directly stated, age wise, when aiming for a wide audience ( Radio can do this better and easier than film) often characters are drawn very broadly.
The book by Pamela L Travers (not related to the Mary of Peter, Paul, and Mary, by the way) was written in l934. Events take place prior to World War I, in the movie one of the songs states l9l0. The movie was released in l964- the Broadway show- which is probably different in many ways- has only been out more recently. Mary and Bert are sort of Jane Addams types with a miore middle-class focus and have super-powers. There is more than a little occultism.
Mary Poppins
Mary Poppins from the book and film series of the same name. Cherry Tree Lane is the address of the Banks family where Mary Poppins arrives as their magical nanny to take care of their children. The street represents a whimsical and enchanting setting for the various adventures and lessons that Mary Poppins brings to the family.
London, England. 1930's.
Mary Poppins is about a magical nanny who comes to take care of the Banks children in London. Through her whimsical and enchanting ways, Mary Poppins helps the family learn valuable lessons about love, imagination, and the importance of family bonds. The story follows their adventures as they embark on fantastical journeys together.
Mary Poppins can find whatever she needs whenever she needs it in her carpet bag. In the 1964 movie she pulled out everything she needed to furnish her room including a bed, coat rack and mirror.
Mary Poppins was created in 1934.
London, England, the entire story takes place there. Even when I was a kid I was a Chauvinist- what's wrong with Disney, why does he avoid Manhattan ( which he did with the exception of one not-too-popular cartoon film)
Walt Disney tried to purchase the movie rights to Mary Poppins as early as 1938, but she did not agree until 1961. Planning the film and composing the songs took about two years and the film was finally released in August 1964.
