I suppose it is a nod or easter egg to the original books of the same name. One night, Jane is ill and has an earache, and Mary Poppins gives her a handkerchief to protect her ears. Something like that. You can find it in the chapter titled, "The Dancing Cow" in the first Mary Poppins book.
They got caught in the rain and needed to take medicine before bed. Iām guessing the handkerchief is for if she gets the sniffles at night.
