When the MPAA rating system was created in the 1960's, X mean't 'For Adults Only'. Mainstream films such as "Midnight Cowboy" (1969) were released under it. That film is the only X-rated film to win an OSCAR. But the adult film industry eventually co-opted the rating. No legitimate theater chain would show a film with that rating. The MPAA eventually created NC-17 to replace X. However, most theater chains also refuse to book an NC-17 film.
Midnight Cowboy (1969) is the only X-rated film ever to win the Academy Award for Best Picture. The film was originally given an R rating by the MPAA, but United Artists' studio head Arthur Krim elected to self-apply the X-rating, which at the time merely meant "Adults Only" and did not connote pornography. The X-rating was a self-applied rating. It was not a trademarked rating; therefore it became very popular in the marketing of low budget sexually explicit exploitation films, and in 1970 the studio resubmitted Midnight Cowboy to the MPAA and it received its original R-rating without edits. Midnight Cowboy has also been deemed "culturally significant" by the Library of Congress and selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry.
No, David Allan Coe wrote both of his Xrated albums as a drug induced joke. The only thing he wrote that was racist was meant as a joke. It was a song about a white guy who's wife ran off with a black guy. His drummer at the time was a black guy married to a white women! It was meant to be a joke. Since youtube people have gotten "Johnny Rebel" and David Allan Coe confused. "Johnny Rebel" is/was a racist. Most of the things that people think were written by David Allan Coe were not. However if you do some research you will be surprised just how many very popular songs were written by David Allan Coe.
