no. It is not illegal to spank a child anywhere in the United States. In many southern states it is legal even to paddle children in the school systems, although it is typically the more rural places that actually do it. Though, Texas paddles many children each school year. All states have some protection for parents to spank usually with the words "reasonable force". Some states like Oklahoma explicitly state that objects such as belts can be used. Whether or not it's on the books, "reasonable force" is a very broad statement and its meaning differs between states, judges, and the year. All of this concerns a parent that spanks only if a concerned person reports the spanking of a child. (obviously). In Alabama I see no reason that a parent would have any troubles with the law in spanking their child as long as it doesn't leave bruises, and nobody reports it. Whether or not spanking is illegal, it has been shown to be ineffective in confidently changing a child's behavior toward positive goals. It is in the opinion of some that it is far too emotionally damaging, and can also leave sexual wounds considering who is giving the spanking, the location (typically the buttocks), and the forced submissive role of being spanked. Most people in the United States recognize that all children are different, and what works with one, doesn't work with all. In contrast, most of Europe has completely outlawed the practice of spanking, recognizing that it is safer to side with caution and clear parenting rules.
