Individual discrete transistors can cost anywhere from a few cents each to a couple hundred dollars each, depending on type and parameters (e.g. power rating, breakdown voltages, speed).

Inside integrated circuits individual transistors are so cheap to make that their cost is commonly measured in micro-pennies each!

The first transistor radio was sold in 1954. The model was the Regency TR-1 and the cost was $49.95. That amount is equal to about $400 in today's money.

Why are npn transistors used more often than pnp transistors?

The primary reason that NPN transistors are used more often than PNP transistors is that they usually operate faster (at higher frequencies) because the mobility of the current carriers in NPN transistors (electrons) is much higher than that of the current carriers in PNP transistors (holes).

How many transistors are fitted into a CPU today?

As of the end of 2016, high end multicore microprocessors have from 3,000,000,000 to 8,000,000,000 transistors. But there are plenty of other medium range microprocessors and microcontrollers with much fewer transistors being manufactured.

Why were the vacuum tubes used instead of transistors in early computers?

Early transistors were much slower and far more expensive than vacuum tubes. Also computers built before 1948 there were no transistors to use at all.

How are today's transistors different from the first ones that were invented?

Today's transistors are much smaller, more efficient, and faster than the first transistors that were invented. They are typically made using advanced semiconductor materials and fabrication techniques, allowing for higher performance and integration in modern electronic devices.
