The US Army (during the Vietnam War) colored code their ordinance, some examples follow: 1. Black tipped .50 caliber bullets were armor piercing. 2. Orange tipped machingun ammo indicated tracer ammo (the tracer element is a chemical). 3. Orange lettering or symbols indicated chemical content, such as tracer, agent orange, etc. 4. Yellow lettering or symbols indicated explosive. 5. Blue indicated inert (a training shell/round). 6. Green indicated a service round (live shell/round). These are the colors of Vietnam service medal awarded to persons who served in Vietnam. They are also the colors of the flag of the former Republic of Vietnam.
