Genetic testing is the best way to discover family relationships. The DNA evidence has a very low error rate and can be used when no other forms of documentation can be found. DNA testing can also link people over a very big span of time. This happened with a prehistoric remains called "Chedder Man" a caveman found preserved in England. DNA testing revealed that one of his relatives still lived in the area he was found in.

On the con side, DNA cannot really give you any other information about the person. Genealogists also want to know details about the person such as their job, friends and how they lived. Recent studies have shown that about one in ten children have incorrect paternity, meaning that the person that they think is their father isn't actually their father. So DNA evidence can also cause problems for families if it turns out that someone may have been adopted or a spouse has been unfaithful.
