There is a sodium and potassium pump in the cells of your body if you get too much sodium your pumps can pump fast enough because it needs to be in balance with potassium. Most people though are actually concerned with sodium causing a rise in blood pressure leading to high blood pressure which really is bad for you. The truth is as long as your blood pressure is normal (you can crave sodium if it is low) and your not falling all over yourself with muscle spasms and cramps you probably ok with how much salt you are getting unless of course you doctor tells you so.

Sodium isn't bad for you, it's just that we have begun eating far too much of it. The daily recommended amount in United State (Dietary Recommended Intake) is 1,5 grams/day. Too much sodium increases your chances of developing high blood pressure, which leads to a whole host of problems including increased risk of heart disease, kidney disease, and stroke.

So, limit your intake of processed foods and try to cook from scratch so you know what's in your food. Check labels to ensure you aren't eating something that totally loaded with sodium and you will be fine.

Sodium can effect various parts of your health if you take in too much every day, such as high blood pressure. however, when someone goes on a low sodium diet most likely the main purpose is to flush some weight quickly. when your body has a lot of sodium in it, you retain water, which can make you weigh up to 8 lbs more than you actually do. also, excess sodium causes bloating, so the stomach may look bigger than it actually is. A human needs at least 500 milligrams of salt/sodium a day to stay healthy, but most of us get upwards of 3000, the recommended intake is 2000 mg. to flush out sodium and water retention/weight you can simply drink a lot of water, instead of going extremely low sodium in your diet and possibly risking your health. Drinking a lot of water flushes out your body and the number on the scale goes down once you pee it all out. The issue here however is that it is just water your losing- your not losing weight or fat by going low sodium.

Sodium is bad for your health when taking in excessive amounts. This is due to the fact that it will cause your body to hold water causing the heart to work overtime.
