Burps are gas bubbles leaving your body. When you eat food you also swallow air. Extra gas escapes from the stomach, travels up the esophagus and comes out the mouth. It doesn't usually leave slowly. the speed of it leaving the body may cause the rapid strecing of the lining of your throat, causing pain.
