They're called 'gateway' drugs - simply because they're often a cheap way to get 'high'. However - they're still addictive and can often lead to the user trying harder (and more expensive) drugs.

Visit websites that discuss the issues about whether of not gateway drugs really exist. The evidence suggests that they do not.
There are no real gateway drugs, it's a term used for propaganda purposes. That being said if you view it as "which drugs do drug users try first?" the answer is alcohol, caffeine and nicotine.
