What happens when you stop taking the drug leflunomide cold turkey?

Leflunomide, a DMARD, (disease modifying anti rheumatoid drug), will take about 3 to 6 weeks to lose its efficiency, that is decrease below its active blood level. You will continue to have it in your system for several more months the blood level will decrease slowly. If you need to get rid of the drug immediately, so you can start another drug that may affect your liver, your dr can give you activated charcoal or cholesteramine orally to absorb the drug. Contact the manufacturer for the details.

What are the assessments in rheumatic arthritis?

AssessmentThe assessment of persons with RA requires a number of observations measures. There is not one single way to asses or get an impression of disease activity and prognosis. The most accepted outcome measures used in clinical trials are derived from OMERACT 1 Conference (J Rheumatol 1994 21 (supplement 41) 86-9). These include the American College of Rheumatology Core Outcome measures.Pain - visual analogue scaleFunction - Health Assessment QuestionnaireNumber of tender jointsNumber of swollen jointsPatients global assessment - visual analogue scalePhysician's global assessment -visual analogue scale.CRP or ESRImprovement can be documented and an ACR 20% improvement incorporates 20% of tender and swollen joints and 3 of the 5 remaining core outcome measures. Outcome measures at 50% improvement can be similarly estimated. A minimum improvement on a DMARD would be 20% and an acceptable improvement may be 50%. There are separate criteria for remission, which is unfortunately uncommon.

What happens when you stop taking arava?

Arava is a DMARD (disease modifying anti rheumatic drug) class of drugs a type of medicine normally used to treat rheumatoid or psoriatic arthritis. It helps to slow down joint damage and also to reduce the symptoms of the disease, such as pain and morning stiffness joint tenderness and swelling. Arava works by reducing the ability the ability of white blood cells called lymphocytes to cause the disease response that leads ultimately brings about the symptoms of RA and similar diseases. It would be wise to discus the discontinuation of this medication with your doctor, before doing anything as it may have prescribed for another purpose. Obviously if Arava is helping keep the symptoms of your problem under control then you are taking the risk of the symptoms being able to develop once again leading to more damage to joints and pain. If you have an averse reaction to this medication then perhaps you should discus the possibility of alternative medication with your physician.

Is rheumatoid arthritis treatable?

There is no known cure for rheumatoid arthritis at present the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis consists of reducing joint inflammation, pain, maximizing joint function, and prevention of joint destruction and deformity. Early medical treatment is important for the best results. Positive and timely treatment can improve function, reduce or even stop damage to joints. The best approach to RA involves a combination of medication, rest, joint-strengthening exercises, joint protection, and patient (and family) education. Treatment is organized according to its severity and location in the body, as well as the general health, occupation and age of the person. Close cooperation between the patient's medical professionals and family can be very important in good outcomes. The medications that are used in treating RA: are first line drugs that are fast acting such as aspirin and cortisone (corticosteroids), are used to reduce pain and inflammation. And then and slow-acting "second-line drugs" (also referred to as disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs or DMARDs). These second-line drugs, such as gold, methotrexate, and hydroxychloroquine (Plaquenil), promote disease remission and prevent progressive joint destruction, but they are not anti-inflammatory agents. The harmful effect of the RA varies depending on the individual. In some cases RA can be can be managed with rest, pain and anti-inflammatory medications alone. In general, however, early treatment is the best way to improve function and minimize disability as a result of joint destruction with the use of second-line drugs (disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs), as soon as possible after diagnosis. More often then not aggressive second-line drugs, such as methotrexate, in addition to anti-inflammatory drugs are required to keep RA under control. In

Is methotrexate an immune suppressant?

Yes Methotrexate is an imune supresant and people using this drug should do their best not to be near anyone woth colds or flu, as they are more likely to pick it up and wil have more dificulty getting rid of it.Have a look at the related link below(Methotrexate: 10 Things You Should Know) Methotrexate is a DMARD (disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drug) used to treat certain types of arthritis and rheumatic conditions. This would be best discussed with his doctor I am an adult on the same stuff and from what I understand there is an increased risk if infection. At one stage I ended up not being able to get rid of a lung infection while on Methotrexate and antibiotics until i dropped the methotrexate for the course of antibiotics plus one more week. If you are on methotrexate make a point of mentioning it to your Doctor if you are going to have any live inoculations against illnesses because the methotrexate will reduce the effectiveness of the injections or possibly make them useless altogether. I started using MTX some yeas ago at 10 mg once a week with 5 mg offolic acid a day because the mtx stops your body from producing it. and it helps protect the kidneys against a lack of the stuff. However I caught a cold or flu. Now normally I would shake it of after a couple of days and make some smart remark to those dropping like fly's all around me like " I didn't like that flu so I decided to stop having it" Methotrexate changed that, As a result of the MTX and possibly the prednisone I take I don't seem to have the same resistance against cold and flu as I used to have. I was back and forth to the doctor for weeks trying to get to a position where I could breathe again without wheezing, I even ended up on asthma treatments, To no avail. So after a couple of month of this I got hit by another bout of flu, only this time I decided to take the MTX into account. I went to the doctor and got antibiotics for the lung infection and got of the MTX for the time that I was on the antibiotic's. The result was that for the first time I was getting ahead of the breathing problem. Luckily my Ra did not flare up during this little experiment and I just got back onto the stuff after missing it for two weeks. I had to have an operation a little while ago and was told by my surgeon to get of the MTX for the week Preceding and the week after the procedure. and once again it did not seem to do any harm. So as I see it if you are in need of your immune system to fight infection sometimes it may be a good idea to get of MTX and get the system working properly. Mind you I am not a trained professional in these maters so bringing this up with your doctor might also be a good idea.
