When he told you he did not want to rush to get back together you should have asked him what he meant by that and why and it is never to late to still ask him. He probably know that there were problems in your relationship and may want to have head space to think things out and also to take the relationship at a slower pace so you both do not make the same mistake twice or, he could mean that he does not want to get back together with you again.
