If he is assuming that you are upset or angry when you are not, then you should talk to him to find out why he is making that assumption, and you should explain to him what is really happening. Misunderstandings, in general, are resolved by communication.

When he told you he did not want to rush to get back together you should have asked him what he meant by that and why and it is never to late to still ask him. He probably know that there were problems in your relationship and may want to have head space to think things out and also to take the relationship at a slower pace so you both do not make the same mistake twice or, he could mean that he does not want to get back together with you again. This is where the good communication skills come into the picture and the true answer comes from him.
