Hash or hashish actually is marijuana but in a highly concentrated form. There are several ways to make hashish, but they usually begin with a powdery substance called kief. Kief is the resin particles that come from the mature female plant cannabis sativa. The resin is most concentrated in the flowers (buds) but is also found in the leaves and other parts of the plant in lower concentrations. Kief is usually made by sifting the dried and finely ground plant parts with a #30 mesh sieve.
The kief can be smoked, but when heated and pressed into blocks or slabs it becomes hashish. The resin is very sticky which holds the fine powder together.
Another method used years ago involved using solvents to extract the resin from ground-up plants. The result is called hash oil, but is not really hashish. The oil may be smoked or added to powdered plant material to make a home-made hash.
Hashish was most attractive to western users in the past with its potency and ease of smuggling. With the potent strains of marijuana grown today and easy availability (at least in North America), there are fewer reasons to go through the effort of making it into a more concentrated form like hashish.
