I had a palate expander a few years ago. I think that the worst part about it was feeling like I couldn't talk or swallow, but that only lasted about 3 days. I don't remember any serious pain from it (and I have a very low pain tolerance), except for when it was put in and taken out. It certainly didn't hurt more than braces did. If you have not yet gotten your expander, be prepared for some discomfort when it is being put in, and also some difficulty talking and swallowing for a few days afterward. But don't worry - it definitely won't hurt every day, and soon you'll forget you're wearing it!
I got my expander in today about 12 hours ago, I've already turned the key twice. an expander works by sticking a thin wire into a small hole an cranking it one time. as the wheel with the key in it turns, it pushes outward. Mine didn't hurt the first or second time. It just feels like tightness and pressure on your teeth.
From what I heard they said it will bleed and it will hurt for a little while so I recommend you to take pain pills and stuff to get rid of that pain and I know how you feel I don't want that to happen to me!
OMG! i thought Id never meet another! I had both, but got the expander taken off, and it is hard to speak at first! but youll get used to it soon. ~Cherry.girl**

Any medication if taken incorrectly can hurt you. In fact just about anything can hurt or kill you if taken to excess. Always take it as prescribed by your doctor.
