There are actually a few ways that hanging kills people. It either snaps their spine, takes their head off, suffocates them, or stops blood flow.
Ending up with a snapped spine, headless, or with head intact all depends on the drop of the platform and the weight of the person. Obviously they won't survive if they are headless. People can however survive a broken spine or an intact head. If a person survives those they can end up with damage to their vocal cords or airway. With the broken spine they can be a paraplegic, paralyzed, or with walking difficulties for life. I can tell you one thing - your back bone never forgets. You'll know whether or not it's raining for the day just by how your back feels. Also a person can have a broken neck, survive it initially then die because they are paralyzed from the neck down and can't breathe.
Depending on how long the restricted blood flow lasts, it can either result in immediate death, brain death, brain damage, or no damage. A person can have brain death but their body still works. They might end up in the hospital with the hospital recommending to the family that the person is taken off the machines. Another one is brain damage. They can end up not remembering the event at all. I have seen some people be in shock that they would attempt suicide. Or they can end up with the mind of a five year old with around the clock care. Or they can have no brain damage at all.
They can have lack of air flow. This can cause brain damage, much the same way that no blood does. But brain death or death from no air happens more quickly than lack of blood.

∙ 14y agoIt depends on the rope, if your neck breaks right away, how quickly you asphyxiate. Probably the least pain if you oil the rope and make the drop high enough to break your neck.
