The normal cycle is 28 days long and you start your period on the first day, day one of the cycle. The period can last 2 days or it can last 6 days whatever is normal for you. However long it takes it will be regularly that amount of days. Halfway through your cycle, day 14 of a 28 day cycle, you will ovulate, = produce an egg. This egg will then sit and wait to become fertilised by sperm. If it is not fertilised by day 28 then your body will shed the egg and it does this by you having a period and the egg comes out with the blood. The whole process is controlled by the hormones oestrogen and progesterone. You will need to be careful however because if you have unprotected sex 2 or 3 days before you ovulate on day 14, that sperm can survive and fertilise the egg when it is produced. Any unprotected sex the occurs from day 10 or 11 until your next period can result in pregnancy. Hope this helps.
