When the body is starving it will first go to its adipose tissue (Glycogen stored as fat reserves). Once it has consumed all of the fat, the body will actually break down muscle and protein and turn it into the nutrients it needs in a process called gluconeogenesis. If this goes on for too long, the body will not be able to sustain itself by attacking muscles...not enough of the right nutrients will cause certain organ systems to fail and eventually lead to death. --Dr. Mekhail--
