These two antimicrobial medications are not at all the same. Meteroidazole is of the notroimidazole family of antibiotics; sulfamethoxazole is a sulfa-based antimicrobial. They're used in different circumstances (usually) and with different patients.

Sulfamethoxazole is ruled out in cases of sulfa Allergies; not at all uncommon, and when this occurs, other antibiotics may be included. Metronidazole is closer to tetracycline, and has its set of limitations. It may also be used as a replacement for amoxycillin-type antibiotics.

Metronidazole is used mostly for anerobics and as an amebicide and anti-protozoal. It's used as first attempt to attack Clostridium dificile (C-Dif).

Sulfamethoxazole (SMX or SMZ) is used against UTI's and staph and strep infections (including MRSA). It works as a PABA antagonist.

In summary, they are not the same and would not typically be used for the same application.
