A study was done by the Himalayan Institute of Medical Sciences where they used Metronidazole topical gel as an antifungal to help with Seborrheic Dermatitis and their results were successful. With that in mind I believe Metronidazole can be used successfully as a antifungal. Hope that helps
Metronidazole gel is not a spermicidal gel. If you're having intercourse while using it, you should use a condom -- not only for the pregnancy protection, but to help resolve the vaginitis.
Metronidazole gel is not typically used to treat toenail fungus. Topical antifungal medications such as terbinafine or ciclopirox are generally more effective for treating toenail fungus. It's best to consult with a healthcare provider for an appropriate treatment plan.

A drug interaction exists between Metronidazole and alcohol, it is known as a "disulfiram-like reaction". If these two are ingested together or even within 48-72 hours of each other it can result in very severe vomiting. Metronidazole gel, though used either topically (on the skin) or vaginally (inserted in the vagina), may result in a low amount/level of systemic absorption i.e. some of the drug may still get into your body system. If it does and you drink alcohol then you will have the very unpleasant reaction described above. It is for this reason that patients are advised to not drink alcohol whilst using Metronidazole gel.
