Assurance engagements: CPA's provide a variety of services, they tend to be customised (unlike the structure of auditing). Can test financial and non-financial information. CPA's test the validity of past data of the business cycles.

Non-assurance engagements: Both engagements have rhe primary purpose of improving the quality of information. These engagements provided by CPA's include accounting and book-keeping services, tax services and management consulting services -- these fall outside assurance engagements.

The extent of work involved in a non assurance engagement is less than that offered in an assurance engagement. The accountant will need to use a series of methodology in a non assurance engagement such as analytical reviews and inquiries of management while more job need to be done in an assurance engagement.

What is assurance and non-assurance engagement?

An assurance engagement is any engagement that increases the level of confidence of third parties and management towards the outcome of an evaluation or measurement of a set of financial statements in accordance with the criteria of the financial reporting standards. This term usually refers to an independent audit. A non-assurance engagement is therefore an engagement that doesn't impact on the level of confidence in the validity of the financial statements. For example, a compilation of financial information or consulting engagement, such as tax or management consulting.

What is difference between non profit and not for profit?

The terms nonprofit and not-for-profit are often used interchangeably, but they have distinct meanings: 1. Purpose & Operation Nonprofit organizations exist to serve a public or social cause without the goal of making profits for individuals. Any surplus funds are reinvested into the organization’s mission. Examples include charities, educational institutions, and healthcare organizations. Not-for-profit organizations are typically smaller groups that do not operate for profit but may serve a specific interest or group, like hobby clubs, sports associations, or religious organizations. 2. Financial Differences Nonprofits can receive donations, grants, and tax-exempt status (depending on the country’s regulations). Their financial activities must align with their mission. Not-for-profits can also generate revenue, but their funds are used only for the group’s operations and not for a broader public cause. 3. Tax Exemption Nonprofits (like Standard Sunrise Foundation) usually qualify for tax-exempt status under laws like the U.S. 501(c)(3). Not-for-profits may not always have tax exemptions and are subject to different regulations. 4. Employee Salaries & Structure Nonprofits often have a formal structure with paid employees. Not-for-profits are mostly volunteer-run, though they can have some paid staff. Both types aim to serve a cause rather than generate personal profit, but nonprofits focus on public benefit, while not-for-profits serve private interests.
