Wayne's friends were a rowdy group. They worked hard and played even harder. For relaxation they would all board John Ford's boat and head for Mexico. On these little jaunts the 'boys' would stay up several days and nights drinking and playing cards. When his buddies started to have serious problems with alcohol and some actually were dying from pickled livers it was a wake-up call for him. He never seemed to have a problem stopping. But some of his friends weren't so lucky. Wayne thought they were like him and could tolerate the liquor without getting hooked.
John Wayne would be the first to admit that he could consume vast quantities of alcohol. But it was not on a daily basis. When he would hang with friends away from the hussle and bussle of film-making they could stay awake for two or three days in a row drinking and playing cards. Yes, he could drink most of his friends under the table, as they say, but it was merely boys being boys. It never seemed to interfere with his work or his personal life.
Their are 147 John Wayne films so getting a definitive answer would take some time and a lot of popcorn, however film buffs in the know say he never said this line in one of his films. It is a common theory that he may have delivered this line in a commercial or a comic of the day used the line in a sketch or shtick and it has just been associated with him over time.
