Does Darren Shan die

He and Steve battle - Darren is winning, but because he doesn't want to become the Lord of Shadows (who causes chaos in the future) he makes Steve furious at him, by saying what Steve has always believed (that he plotted against him all along). Steve stabs Darren, and they both die - thwarting Mr. Tiny's plans.

But Darren goes to the Lake of Souls, and later gets pulled out, and turned into a little person, and sent back into the past - to the day of the Cirque du freak show he and Steve went to all those years ago. While there, he manages to scare young Darren away, so he never hears what Steve had to say to Mr. Crepsley. He then gives his diaries to Mr.Tall to give to the new Darren in the future, before he lays down, and dies once more - but he heads to Paradise now he has done what was needed :)
