He spent a year between secondary school and university teaching English in Tibet at a monastery. He says that the monks there taught him a lot about living a full spiritual life, so he likely has some sort of spirituality. He has not explicitly stated whether or not he believes in God.

Cumberbatch has not made a formal statement about his religious beliefs. He has indicated in interviews that his time teaching English in a Tibetan Buddhist monastery was very formative, and he is "philosophically Buddhist." He was raised Protestant and to some degree celebrates the Christmas holiday. He also is a godfather to his friend's son, which is a title that, according to the beliefs of many Christian denominations, can only be given to a Christian.

He is generally agnostic, but has called himself "philosophically Buddhist" in interviews.
