Prolific readers are often inspired to write their own stories. In the same way, the dream of many gaming enthusiasts is to design their own games. Consider this--Infinity Ward's "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2" video game released in November 2009, shattering day-one entertainment records by generating an unprecendented $310 million within the first 24 hours of release. With video game entertainment becoming increasingly profitable, the pursuit of a game design degree becomes increasingly acceptable. Rather than "rotting your brains out," Video Games can lead to long and lucritive career.

Still interested? Check out the game design degrees offered from the following three universities:

  • The Art Institute - With 45 locations across North America, The Art Institutes are a convenient option for many prospective students. The institutues offer an exceptional degree in Game Art and Design. Classes will introduce you to character design and modeling, set creation, motion capturing software and other essential game design skills. The school also offers a degree in Game Programming, which works hand-in-hand with game design to bring your ideas to the masses.
  • DeVry University - There are more than 90 DeVry schools across North America, increasingly the likelihood of a game design school location near you. Devry's flagship game design program, Game and Simulation Programming, covers the game design spectrum. Starting with the conceptual work associated with early game development, the program gradually introduces students to programming and coding work. Later coursework encompasses quality testing and marketing. Elective classes are available on a variety of topics including massively-multiplayer online gaming, two-dimensional programming and game physics.
  • Westwood College - Based out of Denver, Colorado, Westwood College boasts 17 campuses within six states. Online classes are also available in most states. Westwood offers a program in Game Art and Design, which draws much of its inspiration from traditional cinematography and three-dimensional modeling courses. With video games becoming increasingly cinematic within three-dimensional worlds, these courses are more and more relevant to the game designer.

Possessing a degree from any of these schools would offer a significant leg-up in the burgeoning game design market. Quickly disappearing are the days when talent alone could guarentee work in this exploding field. Education and credentials will you apart from the pack and increase your chances of scoring that dream job.
